KU BO Kawaida EP Out Now

15 Dec

KU BO returns with his “Kawaida” EP. The EP presents five new tracks from the low end territories, put into groove location on the African continent.

With singers Topoke from the Congo, Joyce Muniz from Brasil, Daniecell from Mexico and Anbuley from Ghana, he jam-packs
a trans-global crew of vocalists with a kaleidoscope of nu-millennium Afro-metropolitan groove science; all mixed up with the philosophy of Kawaida – an ongoing synthesis of African thought and practice in constant exchange with the world.

This collection of tropical bangers is a perfect example of the synergy between African influences and domestic club music.

Jamie XX & Gil Scott Heron – NY is Killing Me

7 Dec

The xx‘s Jamie Smith has announced the release date of his Gil Scott-Heron remix album. First reported in March, the xx beatmaker has now confirmed the February 2011 release of We’re New Here, which revisits Scott-Heron’s 2010 comeback LP, I’m New Here.

The remix album will be Smith’s first full-length effort since his crisp, bassy beats helped the xx win the Mercury prize earlier this year. On NY Is Killing Me (see video), Ghostly samples rise around Scott-Heron’s vocals, combining the poet’s inner-city canvas with Smith’s dubstep roots.

Shangaan Electro

14 Sep

I bought this album on vinyl from Honest Jons a couple of months ago and absolutely love the 180bpm speedy marimba rhythms. I haven’t as of yet had the opportunity to play any of these tunes out, but when I finally do, i’m certain that it will set the dance floor off when blended with some rawkus soca!

As usual, Honest Jons never fail when it comes to discovering and putting out great music form far corners of the world, whether it be crazy African dance music to bubbling Reggae and Dub, from Latin beats to Soul, Funk and Jazz. And this release is no exception.

Download – Zinja Hlungwani – “N’wagezani My Love”

Check out Tshetsha Boys – “Uya Kwihi Ka Rose” below, and head over to Honest Jons to buy the vinyl and check out what other musical jems they have to offer.

Anyone lucky enough to get into the Major Lazer party at Notting Hill Carnival a few weeks back will know just how big it was. Killer line up, free drinks and food, guest appearances all set in the sun at Europe’s biggest street party. All the sets from the day are here:

Rodigan’s to follow soon.

Pay particular attention to Douster’s set. Absolutely huge bouncing carnival styles which kicked off the day just right.

Oh and Lee Scratch Perry was there too!!! Nuts.

Ten Thousand Yen

7 Sep

Next up, label review. Relatively new record label, Ten Thousand Yen, put out their first of five limited releases in May this year on a 10″ green vinyl to a limited run of 350. ‘Deeper’ by Venom & Damage was released to rave reviews and smashed out in clubs by the likes of Baobinga, Julio Bashmore, Dubbel Dutch, and XXXY. On the flip is a remix by label owner, Doc Daneeka, who toughens up the bass and percussion with his unique style.

This released has just been followed up by another 350 limited run of 10″ purple vinyl. Baduka / Bump by Chesus X Diverse Concepts and C.R.S.T, again has had big reviews and plays from the major players in the world of bass.

All vinyls are hand printed, numbered, and are a joy to own and play! Check the releases below and grab the vinyls or digitals straight from the labels website. Also check all the release remixes from Ten Thousand Yen’s souncloud page and start following. Don’t miss out!
